Model Gehana Vashisht arrested by Pune Police

In a recent incident, small time actress Gehna Vashist was brutally assaulted in Mumbai on Monday evening by some unknown social activists, after she evoked anger amongst the masses over her controversial bikini photo shoot. Daily Bhaskar reports that Gehna had sported a bikini along with an Indian flag, draped around the lower part of her body. This was a sheer insult to our National flag, hence the people couldn't accept this. Gehna was reportedly attacked by a mob of roughly 20-25 people. If we remember, a few years back, while the World Cup finals was telecast, actress Mandira Bedi's saree became a similar subject of discussion. Mandira's sari on the occasion had images of national flags of all the cricket-playing nations printed on it. But, the image of the Indian Tricolour was in a rather disrespectful position. Mandira's disrespectful act evoked immense anger and raged serious debates across the nation.

MS Dhoni - The Untold Story with movie teaser

M S DHONI Teaser HD

Sushant Singh Rajput on a poster of MS Dhoni - The Untold Story

Click here to watch the teaser Click here
It's the season of batsmen and biopics in Bollywood. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar has now joined the party but there's no Sushant Singh Rajput or Emraan Hashmi standing in. The cricketer will make his acting debut and play a role he's somewhat familiar with - himself.

This at a time when breathless reports are also circulating that MS Dhoni - The Untold Story (starring actor Sushant Singh Rajput) has been acquired for a cool Rs 80 crores. So is it just the money which is taking sports biopics from the start to the finish line with such alacrity? After all we have to wonder why, if making a biopic is so easy, films about personalities outside the sporting arena prove so challenging. (Also Read: A Biopic on Sachin Tendulkar, Starring Sachin

While shooting is in full swing for MS Dhoni - The Untold Story and Azharuddin's biopic, the films about Kishore Kumar and MS Subbulakshmi have been relegated to the back burner in spite of the keen interest of powerhouse performers like Ranbir Kapoor and Vidya Balan.

Perhaps it does just boil down to the economics. After all MS Dhoni - The Untold Story is being produced by Rhiti Sports Management, which is also in charge of Dhoni's career. It's a similar situation when it comes to Sachin's plans. The rights to make the film on Sachin have been acquired by a Mumbai-based production company from the WSG group which also handles Sachin's brand and commercial interests.

While the moolah pouring into sporting stars' pockets for rights to their stories is no chump change, perhaps the biggest pay-off is the increased interest in a sportsperson when a biopic is on the cards. There was definitely something more to Mary Kom than the public perhaps realised before the film, and the boxer is still reaping the rewards.

Also, in a country where sportspersons other than cricketers end up scrabbling for crumbs of attention, a two hour movie could be just the gratification one needs. So get set for more sporting stars to be rather sporting when it comes to sharing the details of their lives, warts and all. After all, who better than a sportsperson to be sporting about their ups and downs?

Anantapur Tower Clock History and Photo

Tower Clock History
OUCH-UP TIME: Tower Clock in Anantapur being given a facelift for the second time in five years.

ANANTAPUR: Two memorials constructed in Anantapur town at the time of Independence, as a mark of respect to freedom fighters and to remember the historical achievement, appear to have lost their significance, if the meddling being done with them is any indication.

Of the two memorials, the appearance of Tower Clock, constructed on the Subhash Road at the intersection of three roads with a large watch viewable from four sides mounted on it, has become a target for the fancy ideas of two Municipal Chairpersons of TDP and Congress before the civic body was elevated to a corporation in 2005.

Losing sheen

On the other hand, the Peace Memorial Hall constructed on the Court Road for cultural and recreational purposes has lost its sheen, as its original use has long been forgotten. A restaurant was run in one portion of the premises for some time and it is being utilised only as a function hall now.

The idea of meddling with the original appearance of the Tower Clock was conceived by the then Municipal Chairperson, V. Prabhakara Chowdary (TDP), in 1999. Accordingly, the mortar plastered stone construction was stripped of its upper layer in early 2000.

The base of the construction was widened with cover-up stonewalls and the upper portion was coated with red clay tiles, specially ordered from Tamil Nadu. The fancy idea had cost the civic body Rs. 2 lakhs.

The next civic chief K. Noor Mohammed (Congress), who headed the civic body during 2000-05, got the large watch mounted on the memorial repaired at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh in 2003. But, the timepiece did not function even for a year.

As part of beautification of the town, another Rs. 10 lakhs was spent a year later for construction of traffic islands around the Tower Clock and on its three sides. Towards the end of his tenure as the civic chief Mr. Noor Mohammed had come up with the idea of removing the clay tiles and instead going for normal cement plastering in early 2005.

Accordingly, the civic body had sanctioned Rs. 3.5 lakhs for the purpose. But the expiry of its tenure and its elevation later had delayed another facial to the Tower Clock. As the Congress has retained its sway on the elevated civic body the work left over by the last council has been taken up now. The memorial has been stripped of its clay tiles and normal cement plastering is being done now. It will be painted with some waterproof shades after plastering work. However, the watch on it continues to be non-functional.
